About

Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) is Scotland’s national innovation centre for the built environment.

This page outlines key information for engaging with the CeNZ-HighDB programme, including project categories, funding opportunities and submission requirements.

(A) – Project Categories

All submitted projects must align with the Centre Core Themes of CeNZ-HighDB. Projects will be assessed based on the relevance to these themes and their potential to contribute meaningful outcomes to the Centre’s objectives.

(B) Project Duration

Projects of duration from a few days or weeks to up to 18 months will be considered, however all outputs and deliverables involving CeNZ-HighDB’s contribution must be completed by 1st October 2028.

(C) Eligible costs

CeNZ-HighDB is funded via UKRI, with strict guidelines on what can be funded. The funding primarily supports academic time to provide research assistance to industry or public sector led projects. It does not fund direct project costs or consultancy. The table below provides an example of eligible and ineligible costs.

(D) Match contribution

Projects falling under Category 2 or Category 3 must demonstrate a minimum 50% match funding of the total project budget as described in the table below.

Table detailing the different categories Category 1 Organisations included are Charities, Community Groups, Micro / Start-Up Companies CeNZ-HighDB request limit of PDRA/Staff resource + Specialist Funding is Max £10k limit of Support per project Match Contribution required is No match required Category 2 Organisations included are Housing Associations, Industry Networks, Membership Organisations or Sector Federations; Local Authorities, Chambers of Commerce, Public Funded Organisations; Small / Medium Size Companies CeNZ-HighDB request limit of PDRA/Staff resource + Specialist Funding is £10k-£50k Match Contribution required is Match min 50%, Can be in-kind and/or cash Category 3 Organisations included are Large Companies / Government Departments CeNZ-HighDB request limit of PDRA/Staff resource + Specialist Funding is £10k-£80k Match Contribution required is Match min 50%, 25% cash + 25% in-kind

(E) Application Process

  1. Project guidelines – please review the project funding guidelines (available upon request)
  2. Scoping meeting – please contact Kaye Keenan, Impact Manager at BE-ST, who can provide more information and support the process, on kkeenan@be-st.build
  3. Please ensure to indicate which of the six Centre thematic areas this covers, a project can involve more than one theme [refer to section (A) on this page].
  4. Expression of Interest – the outcome of the meeting will be an expression of interest document that will be issued to the working group leads
  5. Progression – if the project aligns with working group activities a full funding application will be developed in collaboration between the industry partner and academic lead with support of the post graduate research assistant.
  6. Funding application – a funding bid will be submitted to the Project Management Board for review and decision.
  7. The Centre review panel for project proposals meet approximately every six weeks.
  8. All centre funded projects which are awarded require a 200 word (max) summary about the project. This will be published on the Centre website or in other centre news updates etc..

(F) Outcomes

  • Projects are reviewed regularly for progress and delivery according to the submitted proposal
  • A final report will be prepared by the academic partners, which requires approval from the external partner
  • An agreed “public facing” 200 word summary article of the key findings and outcomes will be published on centre website or other social media
  • External organisation partners are asked about the impacts and outcomes of the project
  • The Centre can provide further support to assist in writing new larger projects – where the applications are to government or industry innovation project funding to expand and develop further the outcomes of the initial centre supported project.
